Creative Tarotscopes: May 2024

May’s astrology provides us with some relief after the intensity of this past month, but that doesn’t mean it can put a stop to what’s already in motion. We’re living in strange, difficult times, and you don’t need astrology to tell you that there’s no clear answer to wtf happens next.

I wanted to offer up some support for this next month with Tarotscopes. These are meant to inspire you in your creative practice, but, of course, the rest of our lives are entwined with our creativity, so these speak to more than just your work in progress.

Read for your rising sign, sun, moon, all three, or whatever resonates.

Taurus: Death

Death is never just an ending; it’s always also a beginning. We’re halfway through spring, so the seedlings you have planted are hard at work underneath the surface. Some might even be starting to make an appearance aboveground. It’s a beautiful time to take stock of what needs to be cleared out. What projects, habits, relationships, or beliefs have run their course? What can you uproot and toss in the compost pile to make room for all the beautiful new things?

Affirm: It is safe for me to release what’s no longer serving me. Death is my reminder that life is cyclical and holds beauty in all seasons.

Gemini: Two of Pentacles

What are you actually devoted to? What do you want to be devoted to? What are you holding that doesn’t need or want your devotion? You’re coming out of an energetically unstable time, and you might be carrying too much now. This is a gentle invitation to set down/set aside one or more of the things that you’re not ready to fully commit to right now.

Affirm: No matter what my capacity is, it is perfect. I can work within my capacity without fear or judgment.

Cancer: The Hermit

Slow down, sweet Cancer. Spend some time tending to the present moment. You might take a cue from the Hermit and actually be a hermit for a bit—be it a week, a day, or an evening spent in bed or on the couch. Or you might go for a walk and enjoy the sounds and smells of spring. Savor a cup of tea and a poem. Find a tree to sit under and commune with. That thing you’re rushing toward? It’s not going anywhere, and taking some time now to get to know the quality of the present will make all the difference later.

Affirm: I am here now. What’s inside me deserves my undivided attention.

Leo: Wheel of Fortune

Change is inevitable, but you might be tired of it at this point. What if you just… let go for a bit? What if you accepted the invitation from Source/god/the universe/your higher self to hand over the worrying and the attempting to manage/control/steer? What if, instead of trying to anticipate every minor detail, you moved your attention to what’s quietly asking for it from inside you?

Affirm: Moving inward helps me balance the wheel. Change happens whether I want it or not, but I am able to balance, recenter, and tend to my needs in the midst of it.

Virgo: Five of Cups

What’s your relationship to your grief? It might be time to stop trying to outrun it, or pushing it aside. Your grief reminds you that you are alive, that you are human, that you care deeply. Your grief might be painful, but please don’t mistake it for something without value. There are lessons, beauty, and expansiveness within the grief itself. Can you move closer to it for a little while? See how that feels?

Affirm: To be human is to experience loss. I and my grief can honor the loss together.

Libra: Hanged One

Coming just before Death, the Hanged One is a space before massive transformation. It holds both what’s dying and what’s being born. You’re being asked to go inward to prepare for the work of Death, which might mean reckoning with some tough stuff. What materials do you need to create your cocoon? What’s ready to be processed or integrated? What wants to sit with you now?

Affirm: My chrysalis is sacred. It is safe for me to be in it for as long as I need to be.

Scorpio: The World

As the final card of the Major Arcana, The World represents a significant ending. You, Scorpio, are always finding yourself in transformation, always witnessing endings and rebirths and the deep lessons that accompany them—that’s the nature of your sign. As your current cycle or journey comes to its end, are you trying to efficiently integrate the lessons? Are you in a hurry to rise from the ashes again? Or are you really allowing yourself to recognize not just the significance of the ending, but the work you have done to get here? Just because you are accustomed to endings and reinventions doesn’t mean you should take this one for granted. Make an altar to your experience—literally or figuratively—and honor it in its entirety before you evolve.
Affirm: Each ending is deserving of its own fanfare. I celebrate and honor this cycle before beginning the next one.

Sagittarius: Three of Cups

Who are your beloveds, and when was the last time you celebrated with them? Three of Cups is an invitation to be in community as our whole selves. Perhaps you want to put together a Beltane celebration with your closest friends. Maybe it’s time to ask that interesting stranger what they’re reading. You may want to take the lead on forming a new writing group with like-minded peers. Or perhaps your ancestors, guides, or deities are calling you to your altar or to create a new ritual. You’re never alone, and right now is the time to embrace your beloveds.

Affirm: My community is sacred. I honor and celebrate my loved ones, and I honor and celebrate my belonging.

Capricorn: King of Wands

How’s that unbeaten path treating you, Capricorn? It’s brilliantly illuminated, even if you’re feeling uncertainty around the unknown. It’s no surprise that you’re finding yourself called again and again to be the trailblazer, to diverge from the well-worn path that you really, really want to follow because it’s safe. But what you’re seeing as safety and security is an illusion. The world needs you to continue to set the example of creating something from nothing, of inventing new genres, of crafting a creative practice on your own terms. What you make matters because of your unique path.

Affirm: I am not meant to follow in anyone’s footsteps. I’m meant to create new footsteps for others to follow.

Aquarius: 10 of Pentacles

With Pluto in your sign since January, you’ve been getting a taste of just how profoundly you’re being asked to change. Whether you’re still bucking against Pluto’s transformative power or you’re settling into a new life you’ve been building from scratch, the 10 of Pentacles wants you to stop and look around. Who have you helped along the way? How are you showing up over and over again? How can you celebrate your deep transformation, even if it’s incomplete?

Affirm: I have come so far. I am proud of myself.

Pisces: Seven of Pentacles

Something isn’t quite working, is it Pisces? No matter what you throw at it or how hard you try, it’s frustratingly out of reach, unfinished, or not in line with your vision. This might be annoying to hear, but things take the time they take. Some roots must travel deep and wide before anything is visible above the soil. If you can, make friends with patience this month, and trust that you’re on the right path. The fits and starts and redos are part of the process.

Affirm: I am always in process. I see the beauty in patience.

Aries: Eight of Wands

You’re probably ready for a break after the frenzy of activity of this past month or so. Prioritize rest as best you can, because you’ve got a lot still in motion. As you rest, reflect, and prepare for the next stage, be sure you’ve cleared anything that might be in the way of your receiving. Put to bed any lingering items that you don’t really need to hang on to. Say no when you can. Pause before taking on anything new. And remember that in order to receive, we have to be open and available.

Affirm: I am open to receiving. I can release excess to keep the channels clear.
