Learning from Alternate Selves
Like many of us, I sometimes find myself haunted by the life I didn't choose. There’s a particular path I didn’t take that I’ve been thinking about often lately, and I’ve been filled with regret.
Reflecting on this other version of me isn't just an exercise in nostalgia. It's a deep dive into the complexities of choice and the longing for the security I envision this alternate self has.
Recently, a tarot reading focusing on regret brought these feelings to the surface. Regret, as it turns out, can be a creative blockade, fencing off the flow of new ideas and inspirations. It's a realization that being stuck in what could have been hinders my ability to embrace what is and what might yet be.
Learning from the Alternate Me
This week's introspection has led me to wonder: What can I learn from this alternate self? Despite the underlying regret, there are aspects of that imagined life—the sense of belonging, the structured environment—that deeply resonate with me. But dwelling on these "missed opportunities" offers nothing constructive; it only fosters negativity and stasis.
Archetypes as Guides
In searching for a way forward, I've turned to archetypes—those universal, mythic characters dwelling within our collective unconscious. Identifying with an archetype, in my case, The Hierophant or The Sage, provides a blueprint for integrating admired qualities into our current lives. This process isn't about becoming someone else—it's about finding elements of that alternate self that can illuminate our path today.
Borrowing from Our Alternate Selves
Even if you don't harbor a specific regret about an unchosen path, there might still be an alternate "you" that occasionally crosses your mind. Here's how you can harness that reflection constructively:
Archetypes: Begin with freewriting or listing qualities of your alternate self, then select an archetype that resonates with those traits. Dive into learning about this archetype through meditation, tarot, or research, and explore ways to embody its essence in your daily life.
Acting the Part: Whether it's adopting certain habits, altering your appearance, or changing your routines, find ways to bring the qualities of your alternate self into your current existence.
Historical or Ancestral Figures: Seek out individuals who embody your chosen archetype. Studying their lives and practices can offer tangible models for integrating desired traits or practices into your own life.
Mapping Out Parallels: Consider the aspects of the alternate life you envy—be it professional achievements, lifestyle choices, or relationships. Then, creatively adapt these elements to fit your current circumstances, crafting a life that echoes the virtues of the path not taken.
A Letter to Your Alternate Self
If directly incorporating aspects of an alternate path doesn't resonate, consider writing a letter to this other version of you. This exercise can provide clarity, release pent-up emotions, and help you appreciate the journey you've actually embarked on.
Embracing the lessons from the lives we didn't choose helps us find inspiration in alternate paths and integrate their essence into our present, enriching our lives with possibilities once imagined and now made real.
