We're all exhausted. So what's the point of making art? The world is on fire, everything feels overwhelming. How can we possibly write in the face of this?
Life goes on when it seems the world is ending. When our neighbors or loved ones or ourselves fear for our lives, livelihoods, freedoms. When each day brings some new horrific bit of news or disaster. Life goes on, but finding the inspiration to create can seem impossible.
Let’s talk about it. Let’s discuss the artists who have done just that—created in the face of unimaginable atrocities. We’ll explore art made in previous moments of crisis, even when it didn’t seem overtly political. And let's brainstorm how we can make art when simply existing feels like a challenge.
Writing at The End of The World will cover why, how, and what to write in the coming months and years. While I don’t have all the answers, I do have some ideas and inspiration. Honestly, I’m looking for ideas and inspiration too—and community is good for both.
We can write as modern historians, documenting the every day lives of individuals in the midst of massive social upheaval. We can write to comfort others and ourselves. We can write frivolous things, emotional things, academic things. It's all necessary. That’s why fascists fear books, ideas, and writers—they understand the power of art.
This workshop will be a mix of reading, discussion, and writing. Come as you are—there’s no expectation to speak or be on camera. Come to listen, share, or just be in community.
A portion of proceeds will be donated to support immigrant rights and trans youth.
