The Art of Self-Disclosure in Nonfiction

When writing memoir or personal essays, the questions of how much to share and when to share it are often overlooked. However, what you disclose, where you disclose it in the piece, and what you choose not to disclose at all have a profound impact on the reader’s experience.

Self-disclosure is craft, but we rarely talk about it as such. In fact, most literary discussion about self-disclosure only really occurs in the context of “confessional” writing.

In this workshop, we’ll look at example texts to see where writers disclose and talk about how it affects the piece. We’ll discuss what counts as “confession” and why, with an emphasis on the ways misogyny, racism, and ableism have shaped our understanding of so-called confessional writing.

We’ll also spend time working with our own writing—you’ll be invited to tinker with a work-in-progress OR play around with a new piece that includes some sort of disclosure.

We believe in making our workshops accessible to everyone. Our sliding scale pricing allows you to choose a ticket price based on your financial situation. Questions about pricing or the workshop? Get in touch!
